Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change begins when people choose to give their time, share what they have and work together in service of others.
This year, Promenade Shopping Centre brought that spirit to life through a heartfelt community activation centred on practical support, personal encouragement and accessible health awareness.
With the support of participating tenants, shoppers, community partners and the Promenade team, the day became a heartwarming example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.
A Morning of Teamwork and Generosity
The day began with the Promenade team and participating retailers working together to prepare sandwiches and food parcels for organisations providing vital support within the local community.
Generous contributions were received from Roots Butchery, Boxer Superstores, Fashion Fusion and Russell’s Pharmacy. Members of the Promenade team also gave their time and helping hands to prepare the sandwiches and assemble the parcels.
Each parcel represented more than a collection of food items. It reflected the generosity of the participating tenants, the time contributed by the team and a shared commitment to caring for people within the wider Mbombela community.
By working together, everyone involved helped turn the values associated with Mandela Day into meaningful action.
Sharing Warmth and Messages of Hope
The activation continued at Promenade Shopping Centre, where shoppers were invited to write heartfelt messages of hope, love and encouragement for the recipients of donated blankets.
Each handwritten message was attached to a blanket before the blankets were personally delivered later that afternoon.
The messages added a deeply personal element to the donations. A blanket provides warmth and comfort, while the words attached to it reminded each recipient that someone had taken the time to think of them.
Messages of encouragement may seem like small gestures, but they can carry great meaning during challenging times. By combining each blanket with a personal note, the activation brought together practical support and genuine human connection.
Every shopper who stopped to write a message became part of the initiative and helped make the donation more meaningful.

Supporting Community Wellness
Community care also means helping people become more informed about their health.
During the activation, Russell’s Pharmacy generously provided free health and wellness screenings to shoppers. These screenings gave community members a convenient opportunity to pause, check important aspects of their wellbeing and engage with accessible healthcare support.
Russell’s Pharmacy’s involvement demonstrated how retailers can use their knowledge and services to contribute beyond their everyday business activities.
Representatives from the South African National Blood Service also attended to share information and raise awareness about the importance of blood donation. No blood donations were conducted at the centre during the activation.
The Power of Tenant Participation
Promenade Shopping Centre’s tenants played an important role in making the initiative possible.
The contributions from Roots Butchery, Boxer Superstores, Fashion Fusion and Russell’s Pharmacy helped the team prepare the food parcels and extend support to several local organisations.
Their involvement showed that a shopping centre is more than a collection of individual businesses. It can also be a community of retailers working together to make a positive difference beyond their shopfronts.
Promenade sincerely thanks each participating retailer for contributing food, services, time and helping hands throughout the day. Their generosity made it possible to reach more people and share the spirit of Mandela Day throughout the community.
More Than a Shopping Centre
Promenade Shopping Centre serves the Mbombela community by providing convenient access to shopping, healthcare, services and everyday essentials.
However, being part of a community means more than occupying a central location. It means recognising opportunities to support local organisations, encourage participation and create moments that bring people together.
The Mandela Day activation allowed Promenade to use its space and relationships to facilitate practical giving, health awareness and messages of hope.
It also gave tenants, team members and shoppers an opportunity to participate in personal and accessible ways. Whether someone contributed food, helped prepare sandwiches, provided a health screening or wrote a message, every action formed part of the day’s wider impact.
Carrying the Spirit of Mandela Day Forward
Mandela Day may be observed once a year, but its message continues through the actions people choose to take every day.
Promenade Shopping Centre was honoured to support four local organisations that received both the food parcels and the donated blankets:
- Child Welfare South Africa: Nelspruit
- CMR Nelspruit
- Sinokuthula
- Bettie’s Haven Orphanage
Promenade is grateful for the vital work these organisations perform and for the care and assistance they continue to provide within the community.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Roots Butchery, Boxer Superstores, Fashion Fusion, Russell’s Pharmacy, SANBS, the Promenade team, every shopper who participated and Hedgehog Media for assisting with the coordination of the initiative.
Together, everyone involved shared food, warmth, health information and words of encouragement with those who needed them. The activation was a reminder that no contribution is too small and that, when a community works together with generosity and purpose, ordinary actions can become something truly meaningful.
