On Saturday, 31 October 2026, the soccer came to Promenade Shopping Centre. Supporters gathered in front of two big screens, families browsed the food stalls, and shoppers stopped by between errands for a glimpse of the action.
It was a free afternoon of live soccer streaming in the heart of Mbombela, and the latest in a run of events that have kept the centre lively this year.
A shared match-day experience
Watching a game with others feels different from watching alone at home. Every near miss gets a reaction, every goal gets a cheer, and strangers end up debating the referee’s decisions together.
For many visitors, the match became a reason to meet friends, take a break from their shopping, and settle in for a while.
Something for the whole family
Not everyone in the family follows soccer, and not everyone understands how a 0–0 draw can be nail-biting (or why grown adults are shouting at a screen). The afternoon was planned with them in mind too. While the die-hards debated every refereeing decision, the food stalls and the centre’s shops and food outlets gave everyone else plenty to enjoy.
Some visitors came specifically for the match. Others stumbled on it halfway through their Saturday shop and somehow never made it back to the grocery list. No judging.
Half-time snacks, sorted
What’s a match without snacks? To add to the excitement, soccer snack hampers worth R1,000 each (along with a slew of other goodies) were up for grabs.
Supporters at home could try their luck through our social media giveaway. In the centre, shoppers who spent at Promenade stores earned a raffle entry, so a quick grocery run or a new pair of takkies could double as a shot at a hamper full of match-day favourites.
The Orlando Pirates took home the win, but the prizes gave the crowd all the more reasons to cheer.
One event in a busy calendar
Match day wasn’t a one-off. Earlier this year, Promenade Cares marked Mandela Day with a focus on warmth and wellness, and on 7 August the centre celebrated Women’s Month. Then September brought a burst of colour, culture, and community for Heritage Month. And that’s just the start of great things to come as we head into the festive season – stay tuned!
Each event looks different, but the aim stays the same: giving people a reason to spend time at Promenade beyond the shopping list.
More than a place to shop
That variety reflects the role Promenade plays in Mbombela’s CBD. Alongside fashion, grocery, and food outlets, the centre is home to a finance hub with major banks, Regus flexible offices, and the Promenade Place apartments.
On any given day, residents, office workers, commuters, and families share the same space. Events like match day give them one more reason to come together.
