September is recognised as Heritage Month in South Africa, providing an opportunity for South Africans to celebrate the cultures, traditions and stories that shape the country’s shared identity.

On 23 September, Promenade Shopping Centre brought this celebration to life with a colourful Heritage Day activation that invited customers, families and retail teams to participate in a day filled with cultural pride, photographs, competitions and prizes.

A Picture Perfect Heritage Celebration

A beautifully designed heritage backdrop created a vibrant focal point inside the centre and gave customers the perfect setting in which to capture their Heritage Day memories.

Shoppers were encouraged to take photographs with friends and family while proudly showcasing their traditional clothing and culturally inspired outfits. From striking traditional attire to colourful contemporary interpretations, the activation reflected the diversity of the Promenade community.

The backdrop quickly became a popular gathering point, bringing colour, energy and a celebratory atmosphere to the centre throughout the day.

Sharing What Heritage Means to Us

The celebration was about more than taking photographs. Customers were also invited to write down what they love about their heritage and explain why their culture is meaningful to them.

Their messages celebrated the traditions, languages, food, music, clothing, values and family customs that connect people to their identities and communities.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture describes heritage as something that is actively practised and passed between generations through language, music, dance, rituals, oral traditions, indigenous knowledge and other cultural expressions.

The contributions shared by Promenade’s customers reflected this living heritage. Each message added a personal voice to the activation and served as a reminder that heritage is carried forward through the stories people tell, the traditions families practice, and the pride communities take in their cultural identities.

Shopping Celebrating and Winning

Promenade added to the excitement with a customer competition supported by participating retailers.

Customers who shopped at participating stores had the opportunity to enter the competition and stand a chance to win prizes. The competition encouraged visitors to explore Promenade’s diverse retail offering while taking part in the Heritage Day festivities.

Shoppers can continue to discover the fashion, food, grocery, beauty, technology, financial and service businesses available at the centre through the Promenade Shopping Centre store directory.

There were also giveaways for some of the best-dressed customers, recognising those who embraced the celebration and expressed their heritage through traditional and culturally inspired clothing.

The combination of shopping, prizes, photographs and cultural expression created an engaging Heritage Day experience for customers of all ages.

Promenade Retail Teams Join the Celebration

The Heritage Day spirit extended beyond the customer-facing activation.

Employees from the different retailers at Promenade were encouraged to form teams and participate in a best-dressed team competition. Staff members proudly represented their cultures through traditional clothing, coordinated outfits and creative team presentations.

The friendly competition brought retail employees together and added another exciting element to the celebration. It also gave the people who serve Promenade’s customers every day an opportunity to share their own heritage and participate in the festivities.

Seeing entire retail teams dressed for the occasion helped create a welcoming atmosphere across the centre and showcased the cultural diversity, energy and community spirit found within Promenade.

Celebrating the People Who Make Promenade Special

According to the South African Government’s Heritage Day information, Heritage Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the cultural wealth of the nation.

For Promenade Shopping Centre, the activation was also an opportunity to celebrate the customers, employees and retailers who contribute to the centre every day.

Promenade would like to thank everyone who participated, shared a message, posed for a photograph, entered the customer competition or dressed for the occasion. The enthusiasm shown by shoppers and retail teams helped make the activation a memorable celebration of culture and community.

The event demonstrated how a shared public space can bring people together, encourage cultural expression and create meaningful experiences beyond everyday shopping.

Continuing the Celebration at Promenade

Promenade Shopping Centre remains committed to creating engaging customer experiences that reflect and celebrate the vibrant Mbombela community it serves.

Heritage Month may be marked nationally during September, but the values celebrated during the activation – identity, pride, belonging and respect for South Africa’s cultural diversity – remain important throughout the year.
